In response to Beverly Swick's Jan. 6 letter (See: "Only English?"), my first husband was in the Air Force. We went to Japan in September 1953, when it was still occupied. If we tried to speak Japanese, people were very helpful, as most spoke English. But if you did not try, they did not know English.
